The Red Habanero Pepper used to be one of the spiciest types of chili peppers and a popular choice among hot sauce makers worldwide. They typically measure 2-6 cm (0.8-2.4 in) in length and come in orange and red color variants. In Brazil, the Habanero Pepper has the same heat unit as peppers grown in other countries, but it is prepared using edible parts of the pepper, alcohol vinegar, and sodium chloride. The resulting mash and puree are packed in 200-kilo barrels and contain sodium chloride added by the farmer using brine as a preservation method after harvest.
The Red Habanero Pepper mash and puree are used as a base ingredient in various food products such as hot sauce, barbecue sauces, wing sauces, salsa, tomato sauces, chili beans, soups, marinades, and more. Although commonly known as Mexican Peppers, Habanero Peppers are also grown in South America, especially in Brazil, where they are exported at prices that rival those of Mexican-grown Habaneros.
Red Habanero peppers have a Scoville rating of 100,000 to 350,000, making them significantly hotter than many peppers but not as hot as super-hot chilies like the Carolina Reaper Pepper with up to 2 million SHU’s.
